This is a digital copy of a four book series on the history of "American Cryptology During the Cold War, 1945-89," produced by the Center for Cryptologic History at the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA). They were declassified and released to the public in response to a Freedom of Information Act request from the National Security Archive at George Washington University.
The history is just Vol. 5 of Series VI of United States Cryptologic History produced by the NSA. The NSA originally published a version of this document, as well as other volumes from that series, online here: http://www.nsa.gov/public_info/declass/cryptologic_histories.shtml. It has since relocated its release of these histories to this web page: https://www.nsa.gov/news-features/declassified-documents/cryptologic-histories/
The National Security Archive's commentary on the NSA's original release of "American Cryptology During the Cold War, 1945-89" is available here: http://www2.gwu.edu/~nsarchiv/NSAEBB/NSAEBB260/
Documents released in response to the National Security Archive's appeal to the International Security Classification Appeals Panel (ISCAP) resulted in the release of less-redacted versions of pages in this history. These new releases revealed that the NSA spied upon civil rights leaders Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Whitney Young, Muhammad Ali, U.S. Senators Frank Church and Howard Baker, and the reporter Tom Wicker, and others. The National Security Archive's commentary on these ISCAP releases is available here: http://www2.gwu.edu/~nsarchiv/NSAEBB/NSAEBB441/
